Some baits, like Finger Mullet don't freeze well. They can become mushy. If I get a bunch in the cast net and want to freeze them, I salt them first. I go with a 2 to 1 ratio on SMALL baitfish. 2" of salt to every inch of bait. Layers in shallow sealed plastic containers, store them in the fridge for a few days, then into the freezer in bags. (I reuse excess salt)
The salt takes out the water content, cutting down on the mushy effect of reexing, but keeps the oils. The salt dissolves out in the water. Great on those days when you can't get fresh, and have to go to the freezer. If you "play" with your salt ratio, you can vary your resulting textures. I have talked with some freshwater guys, and they have tried it with some cut baits that they fish for "bait stealers". By toughening up their baits, they have put more panfish in the skillet on the "nibble"days. Don't ask me what they are using, I always thought that worms were the panfish bait of choice. Maybe this would work on catfish, but don't ask me/
I know that it works with Croaker, Yellowtail Snapper, Mangrove Snapper and other "tug and pull it off" critters.
(Bob, "tug and pull it off" is not intended to be chum, but you are the sheriff...... LOL)

thanks Brian! Never tried freezing bait much cause as you mentioned it gets mushy and easy to pick. I'll have to try the salt next time. Bob, "tug and pull it off" is not intended to be chum, but you are the sheriff...... LOL) But we talking about bait here aren't we? lol

I like to brine my trolling bait's.I tried packing them in salt but, a buddy told me to try soaking the in a strong salt brine for a few days before freezing them.

I brine larger baits. he salt works better for me on smaller baits. A guy I knew in NJ used to cut his fresh squid into strips and rig them on a hook before paking in salt and then freezing. Said that it really put a halt to bait stealers.

I never thought about salting fresh water baits. When inshore fishing I try to use fresh bait and, always carry a cast net to keep fresh bait

Well, Rich might be stuck behind the 8 ball. There seems to be a lot of those on the billiard table of life these days. I should know I've been bumping up against one for a good bit of time now, and I see the cue ball rolling toward the rail behind it again. I might be pulling a disappearing act again.
