Ok Sandy, you're the resident Redfish Guru. The wife is talking about taking the new kayak across some flats that are "Puppy Drum" hang outs after we so some shake down cruises. Would it be worth my while to drag some plugs or other artificials as we go along? Do Reds hit a slow trolled bait? (Trust me, if she announces that she spots one "waving hello", or kicking up mud, there will be something cast at them.)
I'm not taking the fly rod on this adventure. She will probably be sitting second seat, and I don't think she wants a gold Clouser for an ear ring. So, let's stick with suggestions for conventional tackle.

Puppy drum, spot tale bass, red fish, red drum there all the same critter. It just depends on where you are up and, down the east coast. You are in the northern edge of there range. They will take a slow trolled yellow buck tale.Another good one for them is a sting ray grub with a white body and, red tale.If you encounter them tailing you can drop a DOA shrimp or crab in front of them.

Ok, thanks. About dropping stuff in front of them... Uh, I'll be taking directions from the wife for sight casting (hoo boy, directions from the wife and fishing, words I thought I'd never say in the same sentence... LOL). Do I have to put the bait under their nose, or will they turn on something near them? (Do they spook as easy as Bones?)

They will get spooky if they have been pressured just as easy as bone's.You don't have to put in there face but try to put it in front of them if they are tailing. If they are mud balling all you have to do is put the bait in there close to them and, they will take it.If you are going after them with a spinner you may want to take some fresh cut menhaden rigger on a Carolina rig.

That's good to hear. Apparently, when it comes to directions, my left is not the same as my wife's. If I had to rely on her directions to put a bait in front of a fish, well... It would end up something like an Abbot and Costello routine.

Another way to catch them is using cut menhaden under a popping cork.I like to drift the edge of the flats at low tide .the trick is to have fresh bait and, try to keep it close to the bottom.

I'll keep that in mind. The area is going to be totally new to me. Finding ledges and such wil take a bit of time. (You're going to love this) I can't just get out of the yak and wade fish... Apparently the local military base has left some unexploded ammunition in the water during the past... Not exactly the place for a blind guy to be walking around with a cane... LOL

Maybe that's part of her plan... scare the fish out of your area and into mine... Ya think she could be that sneaky?
