(ok, this a bit more of a boating saftey story, but fun none the less.)
YEEHAWWW....... OH S(**&^%*&*(!
Just the other day my buddy took me out on his little boat. Maybe the weather was a little rough for such a small boat. I know we overloaded it and over powered it a little. ok maybe a lot. LOL. He's been braggin fer years that he can get me some fish. so I kinda put him to his words and we were going to try no matter what. Well the fishin was non exsistant but this ain't no story bout fishin........ once on the water the wind really started to pick up and waves grew to little white caps. we were off st johns inlet gulf side of st pete. mild shelter from gulf. as the fishing was stinkin due to the not so agreeable weather we were bouncing around and enjoying the boat ride. in those conditions it was a ride. now picture a couple o crackers, trying to look like we do this every day, neither of us willing to show a moment of hesitaion, riding this 14' gheenoo, whoopin it up, we had just crossed the channel that had big boats rippin thru it and were riding a big wake wave. I was turned to face my bud not wantin the spray in face so we were talking and laughing and getting good ole boy, i let out a yeehaww as we rode up high on the first wave. I saw us come down off it and the next one start to catch the back of us, laughin all the way, now bud's a big guy, 6 something 300+ linebacker kinda guy, when we started to fish tail, the boat tipped, water started to slip over the edge, the gear in the boat just started to loose it's grip on the bottom of the boat, i hollered something I can't type here and just as we were about to cross the line of no return he LAUNCHED himself over the edge and into the water. Looked just like when the navy guys bail off backwards while screeming across the water. I'll pause while you wipe up the beer you just blew out your nose onto your screen...................
Now we ain't done,
This little boat with it's little old motor has no kill swtich. I am now watching bud get smaller and smaller as we (me and ALL the gear) go speeding away! more hollering as I dive spread eagle across the entire length of the boat to grab the motor! this has got to look like something right outta the funnies!!! I am laying down belly bowed across all the tackle, cooler, and seats and the I have no idea whats what on this motor. all the writing is worn off and he had mentioned that the throttle was really sticking. eveytime i looked up I saw his head bobbin in the water next to the wake wash getting smaller. well I did not have the strength to throttle that thing down and had to just take both hands and crank it down to stop. I would have turned around and gone back but I was laying down and couldnt get up real fast without tipping us over. i really didn't want to run over bud either and knew that somewhere infront of (now behind) me was the channel! I got it stopped but it dies in the process. now I have a paddle. did i mention the weather....... ha! I felt like the bobber I was using a few minutes ago! he's hollerin at me to paddle back and I am just betting farther away. finally dropped the anchor and was dragged into the mangoves. waited for him to catch up. we had a good laugh. thanked our lucky stars for lots of things, wind direction, etc. did we get off the water after that? um well no, but did kinda loose our bravado. we boated around for a little longer looking for something that might have a fish in it and not be wind blasted but it didn't exsist. kinda kept getting rougher and we finally did give it up. i think he didn't want to go back the lauch soaked head to toe! LOL. I'll bet there was a small craft advisory that day. lol. perhaps we should have thought about that. everyone was ok and it only cost us the bait so we can laugh about it but it really was a crazy thing to do.
thank goodness I was facing him. I could not have turned around without tipping us over with the boat running like that and him not steering. I had gear packed around me and couldn't do it fast no matter what. something to think about. I was also looking at motors on ebay and now i think I 'll try to buy something with a kill switch. LOL. seems I have to remind myself of my limits every so often. i suppose that is why they call it learnin the hard way!
