Ok most guys I know that go catfishing go out find a spot and cast out their favorite bait and wait all night. If they don't catch anything they pack up and go home and say they just weren't biting. Well this is not the case, they are just not at the spot your fishing. Be more mobile when you catfish and you will be more productive. Pick some good spots too not just the most convenient spot to plant your butt. Fish areas which are likely hold catfish, like areas next to current, submerged brush or stumps. I usually stay at one spot for a half hour and then move on if nothing hits. As far as bait I don’t use the same thing all year round but try to figure out the natural baits for the time of year and fish with those. In the spring I use shad or shad strips, summer through fall I tend to use nightcrawlers, chicken livers or both. Of course these may not work for you, find out what the natural baits are in your area. Also remember if you’re after flathead cats they only take live baits. Channel cats and bullheads aren’t so picky.
Good luck and tight lines!

Some well intentioned person put some flat head cats in the upper Edisto river not far from my home town.Until that time we had no flat heads in SC.The Edisto is what we call a black water river that is constantly on the move and, WAS famous for it's red brest fishing until the flat heads showed up.The state wild life dept. is trying to remove them from the river and, have passed regulations to allow us to use live bream as bait for them.Up until then live bream were illegal to use for bait because they are game fish.

Thanks Bob. What live bait do you use on the flatheads?? I have used live sunfish to catch the big ones. I don't use them anymore though because I feel bad for the little guys. Plus I don't think it is legal in this state to do that. I have also used minnows and chubs which are legal baitfish but those don't produce the big ones like the sunfish did. Also I forgot to mention that some of the flat heads I have caught were in the middle of the day. Unlike what most think, catfish are active all times of day. I read a study on this a few years ago.

Very interesting stuff... I wouldn't know one Cat from another, just not experienced enough. I mostly experience saltwater cats. (We consider them nuisance fish, and judging by the smell, they have to taste bad.) Considering that I might be doing some more sweet water fishing, I'd like to know if there is a taste difference between the species of freshwater cats. Been a long time since I've caught them, what should I look for to have a tasty meal??

I don't eat the fish I catch I just do it for the sport and let them go. With that being said I hear that channel cats have the best flavor and texture. I don't want them too big either, best tasting are 12 - 15 inch.

I also used sunfish in WV. I caught some nice cats below the lock and dam at New Martinsville, WV (Ohio River). That bait is prohibited here in PA. Bob... Yes the cat is real. Caught in China... 436lbs. I'm preparing for a catfish derby next Friday and I will take a chance on your advise. Hope your not trying to trick us. Would you be willing to put your hand on a Bible? I'd feel more confident if you did! Lunk
