I went by Bishops tackle the other day and he is selling out all of his fly tying materials at 50 % off. I didn't have no extra money to spend and had to twist my own arm and make my self leave befroe I spent money that I didn't have to spend. Cnot, that is right in your neck of the woods. You might want to take the wife over there so she can get here some fly tying materials. Remember to take the plastic. Dan

Been there, and now we are fully stocked!!! I am going to call him later today to see if he still has the TFO 12 wt. At 50 percent off, it will sit in the closet until I can afford a reel. (He didn't have anny reels for it when we were there.)

It's a shame to see another fly business go by the way side. So far ours are just barely keeping their heads above water. Was he mostly saltwater? Rich

Yes Rich, he caters to the SW fishermen. In this area MOST of the saltwater is only accessible by boat or public pier. Both are not that conducive to fly fishing, piers because of the crowds, boat because the style of boat needed for fly fishing isn't always the best for water conditions. Our area of the Bay can rock n roll with a turn of the tide or weather. Add in the fact that there is a BPS just minutes away from his location, and you can see why he had to make a cut in his materials. He still covers higher end fly tackle not found in big box stores, and will make orders for fly stuff on request but he has little in stock. With the economy the way it is, shop owners have to go where the money is.

It's hard for the little guy to compete with the big box places on the less expensive stuff (Not just the cheap crap, but the "everyday stuff"). The volume buying makes it impossible to find a comfortable profit margin. So, the little shop has to find things to offer that the big guys don't.
Big box stores don't stock much "higher end" gear because it doesn't move fast enough, and I have noticed that the ones in my area can be quite rude about it. I actually had a clerk at a Big Box store tell me that since they don't carry Van Staal reels, they must be pieces of crap.
Sorry to rant, but being the Christmas shopping season, I'm more than a little annoyed at customer service!
