Ok riddle me this rod men: In preparation to fish from the kayak, I'm trying to figure out the rod I want to start with.
I want a two piece short stout rod (med heavy.) somewhere in the 20 pound class. I don't want to spend the money for a custom built until I log some time on the water in the yak. (don't want to cry if it goes for a long swim.) But I can't seem to find such a best.
So my question is this:
If I find an inexpensive off the rack one piece rod that I like, can it be turned into a two piece?? (Two pieces that will go back together. I can break a rod myself. LOL) If it is something simple like cutting it hen putting ferules on, I can be fishing sooner than waiting for a special order.
Thanks in advance!

Brian, Go talk with your local tackle guy. I would look at a St.Croix two piece rod. They have a rod that is medium action and,6ft.

Sandy, I have a cheap "beater" rod, picked up when my nephews kids wanted to fish. It's 4 foot long. I want to turn it into a two piece so that I can stow it in the yak so that I never utter the words, "Man I wish I had a pole on board." I could stow the longer rods, but it would be a balancing act to pull them out while on the water. I have an old four piece bait cating rod from when my brothers were Boy Scouts. Not quite enough back bone for some of the larger fish. Tackle stowed in the yak will get abused, and as I said, there is a little higher risk in a yak that stuff will go for a swim. (building rod leashes tonight.)

A good two piece rod is not just a one piece rod cut in two w/ ferrules added. A good rod taper is designed to accommodate the ferrule and the effect it will have on the rod. Consider buying a two piece cheapo at Wallyworld or someplace. You can buy a cheap rod, all finished out and ready to go for less than the cost of the blank for a custom rod. One of the nicest spin rods I own is a UL Shimanno that I bought for less than $10. For not a lot of bucks you can buy a rod to see what works on the 'yak and after you move on to a quality rod you will still have a beater or loaner -- and if it gets trashed --so what? I have never fished from a yak but I have spent a lot of time fishin' from a canoe. I have found that sitting that close to the water I prefer a longer rod than I would if I was wading or standing on the shore. But then a longer rod has all the problems of that extra length hanging out there when it is not being fished. AgMD

Thanks agmd. I found a pack rod in my attic stash that is going to do the trick. The shorter rods are gong to be my flat lines and the longer rods my outriggers. Yes, I will have a spread in the water when the Stripers are getting cautious later this season.

But, Bill I think a fairy tail pink ultra lite rod would be just the rite rod for you.we can put a gold Dawah reel on it with nice red line and, you would be the talk of the high fashion crowd around the fish pond .
