Figured I'd start this one so that not only can my friends on here keep up with my progress and give me a hard time about it, but anyone who stumbles acroos it in a search about modifying a kayak for fishing and learn from my trials and tribulations... (Keep in mind this is a Hobie Outfitter which is their tandem version of the Outback. Same hull, but with two seats and drive systems. Makes storage space a bit different!)
Started with getting the ff/gps figured out. We went with the Humminbird 787, a little big by yak standards, but doable, with some thought. My wife is a little shorter than myself and wanted the unit mounted within easy reach in order to switch screens and store wypoints and structure maks.... That involved a RAM mount with balls at two ends of an extension bar. Not too tugh, if they are in stock in the stores in your area... Seems the bar is either REAL popular ind flies off the shelves, or nobody wants it so no one keeps it in stock. (Don't ask me which!) Installation postponed until available....
Helping me with this are a couple guys that have rigged out some yaks in their day, not quite like mine or with my needs, so the process has started with a lot of standing around the yak with a cold one in hand cussing and dicussing wants/needs and what can be done.
Needed trolley anchor sustem.. not too hard to do, but need to wait until we are sure where the ff/gps will be located....
Wanted, speaker system... Oh boy, can of worms here... Look for a future post on this! Need to have it in hand and convince one of my helpers that it's going in whether or not he thinks it is not only waterproof but SALTwaterproof as well.
Cock pit, running, and fishing lights... I might look like a floating disco ball by the time this is over....
Battery location and system to fire up all this (not to metntion the blender which I haven't mentioned much about to them..)... Two 12V 7A motorcycle batteris in waterproof box in back hatch area is the plan... Oh no, hatch not big enough to get the box in and out to recharc bateries... Ordering bigger hatch tomorrow night... Seems there needs to be a little talk about which model.... Might need to work on a temporary fix for this one, one of the helpers is going out of town on vacation, and I might have the chance to fish while he's gone, and want the ff/gps running for that one....
Rod holders for riggers and/or light poles... Still dicussing locations and NEEDS. ("Four built in rod holders Whay do you need more?") Ok yaks are sublect to rolls and other things that can put you in the water, getting wrapped in lines can be a danger, so this discussion may take some time. They have to covince me that I'm not rigging out an offshore sportfishinng boat....
There's the set up folks! Keep your eyes on the thread for more updates as this goes along! (As I said, tomorrow night is next work scheduled to take place if some parts come in.)
