Ok sweetwater guys.... What the hell is a Bowfin? Heard we have a lot of them around here and that they are fun on the long rod.... Do I want to play with them, and if so, what fly should I throw at them?

That my friend is what we call a mud fish around here.It is one of the few fish that have a lung and, it can breath out of water.A very old species. They will take live minnows and, deceivers

I know that they are not table fare... But I've heard that they are fun to play with, sort of a good practice fish. Is that true? I think there might be some in the pond within walking distance of my house, and since I'm not gettiing a chance to fly fish in saltwater because of the wind, I thought it could be a good thing for me.

Bowfins are great fighters for they're size! Don't know what to tell you on flies since I'll not a flyfisherman. I do know they crush lures so use something durable because they have very powerfull jaws. They are not picky eaters so anything that moves I would imagine. Watch out when you land one they are mean and will try to bite you and it hurts.
