There are ways to make all of the work. The down rigger ball can be used with a drop line on a small cleat.I would try some thing along the lines of a #52M red and, white mirror lure with the lip turned down to make it bump the bottom at slow speed for starters .

That is a good start. I was just thinking that if I took one of my old rod butts with reel seat, cut the rod just long enough to feach ove the side of the yak, to keep the line clear of the gunwale, and put a tip eye on the rod, I could mount an old reel with some heavy line, and I would have a down rigger that would stow in the small hatch, keeping line out of the way. For the downrigger weight, I thought of a weight made from slightly modifying a tennis ball with some wire and filling it with cement. Line attatched to wire (with swivel) and clip attached ot the other wire for fishing line. The weight would be yak friendly because of the tennis ball covering for the banging around it would get while being transported. Thought it might even be useful on founder drifting. The anchor and downrigger weight could be adjusted to cause the yak do drift in almost a "bridled" manner. Could be an advantage with two anglers in a yak. Driftin lines broad side rather than astern. (Remember, the yak is set up for one person in front of another. Bottom lines when an anchor is deployed could get tangled easyily.) Anyway, this was my thinking process. I may have to make the thing, try it and see if I like it. Yak fishing in saltwater in my area is still kind of new, everyone is trying to build a better mouse trap.
So far the ideas are coming from anglers who fish your inshore conditions, using the yaks to get to wading places, freshwater river fishers, the west coast where they launch in surf and fish kelp beds, and the "nuts" (as I call them) who take the yaks out in their offshore boats and use the yaks out there.

We had a yak fisherman get himself killed here a few weeks back messing around in one of the inlets and, got pulled out to sea by the tide through the surf. He was one of those folks from up north that new every thing and, us dumb southerners didn't no what we were talking about but, we had to go find him.

THAT'S the other problem... People that have paddled a kayak around the lakes are thinking that the Ocean is just a big lake and coming as underprepared as my wife has gotten us overprepared. (Found Pop Tarts and Fig Newtons in the emergency kit today... I guess you might need an emergency breakfast, so that might account for the Pop Tarts... But, I only eat Fig Newtons while drinking Scotch, and I'm trying to figure when that situation would come up... "Oh look!! A bottle of Scotch washed up on our deserted island, good thing we have these Fig Newtons." Maybe I missed that episode of Gilligan's Island...) GETTING BACK TO THE MORE SERIOUS SIDE...
Yakking in the ocean is a lot trickier than some people think. They don't realize that inlets become outlets to the sea when the tide gets turned... and like the Tidy Bowl Man when the lever gets pulled... You're on youre flushed.

Hey! If anyone goes into Wally World I need someone to give me the low down on the frozen drink machines they have that sell for under 100 bucks... They're supposed to be the add the mix and ice typ like the industrials, but for home use... I need to know if they look like they could withstand my use.... Someone saw one and thought of me, I haven't been able to get there, and let's face it, this is not the thing to ask the wife..... I sent her out for a cut off saw once, she came home with a hand saw, I had a compound mitre with 10" blade in mind when I sent her to the store....

Yeah, not good. I almost never spend a nickel in the place... Only if I absolutely can't find what I'm after somewhere else. (Which is rare. Most of the time, we go in, look at the product, see if we want it, then put it back on the shelf and see if a local shop can get it. Rather spend a few extra bucks for local pockets than put any money in Wally's pocket. And most times, the locals find a better product in the same price range once they know what you're looking for.)

It's crazy. They are the reference library for my shopping, and that's about it. I just don't trust where they put the money. They say one thing then do another. All the big box stores do it. I don't like spending my money in any of them, if I can avoid it. Sure we browse, then I'm usually saying"good bye, glad your air conditioner was working."
