I always carry an outfit to use as a dead stick (one left in the rod holder). Most people that dead stick think of it only as a bait (live or cut), but there are other ways to work one.
One that has been VERY successful when anchored in a good current is to slap a larger crank bait (rattle trap, lipped plug, spinner baits, etc) on, and drift it astern in the current. Set the drag to your strike position, and let the lure work in the current while you work another rod. Many a big Striper have fallen prey to this method.
Another is to put a diamond or butterfly jig on the line and let it sit down there just far enough so that the motion of the ocean won't let it snag on the bottom. (This works really well if you can run the line out on you ourigger while anchored or drift fishing where mid to lower column fish are around.)
Remember, dry hooks don't catch fish, so put a line in a spot out of your way, but near enough to get to while working your other line.

And dead sticks tell no tales. Rich
P.S. Great tip. One question. Is that like using a teaser?

No Rich. This isn't to tease up the fish, though they can get their attention for you to make an "active" cast at them, the dead stick is all business (meaning there be hooks on it). Sometimes the fish will take a "lazy" bait, whether it is because the fish is lazy or just plain annoyed that it is hanging around or for whatever reason. This is just a method of utilizing time and space on the boat, or area, you are fishing.

I use a dead stick a good bit with a live mullet or pin fish while drift casting inshore and, off shore.

That's how I started, then moved to using lures one day when a BIG striper hit a plug on a rod I had put in the holder while taking care of some business on board. Got me to thinking about how the boat?water movement could work a lure, now the dead stick is more than just a bait situation.

It is sort of like a way I sometimes fish a streamer. I let the river current work the streamer and I add no action or retrieve to it. Rich P.S. I caught a 18' wild brown trout using that technic.

Sometimes the best action is to take inaction.

I have had king's and, miamia hit red and, white sisco kids that had been left out while fighting a fish on another rod.
