When ice fishing use lighter tackle. Pick a smaller rod and reel, lighter line and if you are using a bobber make it a small one. This will help you feel light bites that might otherwise go unnoticed.

No I catch big ones too it just takes a while and I make sure I have my drag set right. In the colder water they move and hit much slower. So if there is more resistance due to heavier tackle they sense it before I noticed them.

I've seen the rods they use for Ice fishing. They look like rods for munchkins. What size fish can they really handle? Can you also practice catch and release?

I've seen the rods they use for Ice fishing. They look like rods for munchkins. What size fish can they really handle? Well those are not designed for fish much over 10lbs I'd say. There are a few rods that aren't any longer but thicker. Problem is you have no sensitivity what so ever. I use my 5' 4" ultralight and have caught some bigger fish on it. It takes a while since you just can't hoss them in. I release all my fish I catch so yes. It takes longer for them to recover so you just can't throw some of them back in.

That makes me a lot happier. Have you ever caught catfish while ice fishing?

I have an Ultra light 6' spinning rod. Can I use that for ice fishing? It has 6lb. test on it? Do you use live bait or jigs?

6 ft may feel a little long fishing over a hole but it will work. I use both jigs and live bait
