What brand of reels do you use and trust the most?
I'm a big fan of Shimano spinning reels but I also like Penn.

Spinning I LOVE my Van Staal, trust my Penns, (I have some Spinfisher 710's gtom my teen age years that have never been serviced and still could be fished with confidence!). Conventionals I own are all Penn, some older than I am, still running like champs, parts still available when needed. These are all saltwater reels. I have just aquired some Shimano spinners and baitcasters designed for freshwater, so far no complaints, I use them for backwater salt fishing. They have been sitting in the shed in Fla for a a year, I'll see how they stored!! Fly reels are Reddinton and SA, haven't put them to real tests yet....

Spin -- I like the little Shimano ultralites. Fly --I am partial to reels w/ a palming rim. My favorite is a Hardy Marquis #5, most of my fishing is small stream, light lines. For the big fish that run out of Ontario I just picked up an Orvis Battenkill Barstock V. I haven't even put a line on it yet but I think I am gonna like it. I have been lusting after a Hardy Bougle, but first I have to find an all night liquor store that does not have security cameras or a clerk that can shoot. ;D AgMD

Im a Vann-Stall fan when it comes to spinners but, Penn and, shimano run a close race with them in my gear locker. As far as fly reels go I like to use a reel that has a good drag system and, a larg arbor. My favorites are the lamsons and, Ables

spinning reels - penn, tried other brands and they just seem to last as long fly - i like all 3 brands i have pflueger trion, islander sx, and a cabelas prestige (for 19.99 it was a steal!) i recently purchased a avet sx conventional for surfcasting and it seems to be built like a tank, time will tell

I have a couple shakespeare rod and reel combo's. One is a super ultra lite and the other is meduim heavy catfish rig. I agree Tom that the ugly stick is probably the best rod around.

The Ugly Stik is the only rod I will use. Strength, flexability, sensativity. Also, I have been using Mitchell (Garcia) reels for nearly 50 years. Did you know that Mitchell reels made before 1965 are worth more than $100.00 if operable? I saw a 1964 reel in mint condition go for $600.00 on Ebay... whew!

Those were the original reels made in France in the late 40s and, through the late 50s I have some 300 and, 301 models made around that time that are still very fishable. They are a lot like the Z series Penn reels in that they are simple and, easy to maintain unlike the new reels today.

I have a few ambassadeurs that hold up to anything. The best reel I have ever used is my Penn International 965, it just needs more maintenance than my others. My fly reels are pfleuger and although not the best, I would put them up against anything. As far as rods go, Castaway rods are my preference. I would use G. Loomis if I could afford to. They are amazing.

Wow I have three Mitchell 300's that are pre 65 and still fishable and working. They are just collecting dust since I went totaly fly. Rich

Rich, It won't hurt your presentation if you cast a spinner once and, a while.

Yea going back to the end of the line caring the body of the line can be a little tricky unless you do it enough.

Well maybe next year I'll give it a try again. I just catch more withj a fly rod than a spinning rod. Rich
